Patient Information for Surface Sclerotherapy

  • Surface sclerotherapy is a procedure used to shrink and collapse unsightly spider veins by injecting a chemical agent into the vein with the purpose of destroying the vein so blood no longer flows through it. This injection sclerotherapy procedure is also known as endovenous chemical ablation.
  • Surface sclerotherapy is routinely used by vein specialists at The Heart Specialists Group, LLC. to treat and destroy unwanted visible or spider veins. A vein light is used to trans-illuminate the targeted vein, which assists the vein specialist to direct a small needle into the vein lumen to ensure accurate placement of sclerosant.
  • Mild discomfort may occur following a sclerotherapy session. This is usually described as a temporary burning or cramping sensation. Along with leg exercises and walking, over-the-counter acetaminophen (Tylenol) or Ibuprofen may be taken to alleviate post-procedure leg discomfort.
  • A surface sclerotherapy procedure usually takes about 15 minutes. Following your treatment session, you will need to walk on our clinic treadmill for 10 minutes.
  • Usually a majority, but not all of the treated veins can be eliminated with each sclerotherapy injection session. Several sclerotherapy sessions are usually required to eliminate the majority of veins treated using this technique.
  • Surface veins responsive to sclerotherapy usually do not reappear. However, smaller visible surface veins may appear after sclerotherapy sessions in response to redirected blood flow. After surface sclerotherapy sessions are completed, the vein specialist may recommend surface laser treatments be performed for residual tiny surface veins which are too small to inject.
  • Your vein specialist at The Heart Specialists Group, LLC. will determine the treatment interval for your surface sclerotherapy sessions, as well as the duration of time you will need to wear compression stockings following your sclerotherapy session. In general, sclerotherapy sessions are scheduled every 1-2 months.
  • Wearing your compression stockings as instructed by your vein specialist at The Heart Specialists Group, LLC will optimize the effectiveness and overall clinical outcome of your vein treatment sessions.
  • It is important to remember that it took years to create your vein problem. Realistically, it may take weeks to months for vein specialists at The Heart Specialists Group, LLC to eliminate your veins. It may take many months for your body to shrink and collapse the treated veins before maximum cosmetic benefit is achieved.
  • The Heart Specialists Group, LLC offers a 24-Hour Answering Service for our patients. If you have any questions or concerns, please call the office to speak with your vein specialist or to their nursing staff at 908-654-1200.
